What Fast Ford Say About Pumaspeed (Fast Ford Article 2005)

Pumaspeed, it does exactly what it says on the sign. Well, sort of. Sure, when Tony McQuire launched Pumaspeed back in 1999, it did specialise in Pumas, but in recent years the company has spread to cater it"s expertise for a much wider range of Fords.

"I built an Escort Cosworth in 1995 from a shell, that was my intro to Fords" explains Tony. "When I first saw the Evo Puma I decided I wanted one of those instead." Tony reckons that is Ford could produce a Puma 4X4 then so could he; this man"s not lacking in self confidence
"I was re-shelling loads of Pumas at the time" he remembers "I wanted an RS200 but I didn"t have the money to buy one." By then Tony was driving around in a 460 bhp Escort Cosworth and the simplest idea seemed to be to transfer the good bits across to the puma shell. A straightforward transplant? "Nowhere near," Tony replies. "It was a nightmare." Work was abandoned for almost 18 months while the needs of his growing customer base started to take up most of his time - he thinks he re-shelled about 60 Pumas during his early years, and could now go on Mastermind with Pumas as his specialist subject. He"s built up a mind-numbing level of knowledge about parts right across the Ford range; what parts are interchangeable between models, or need to be adapted to fit.
Tony reckons that his Cosworth Puma was never planned as a publicity gimmick - it was always just going to be his car; end of story. Although, Pumaspeed hasn"t done bad for publicity out of the car, despite that claim. We refer you to Exhibit A - the front cover of May 2003"s Fast Ford, which proudly hangs behind the boss" desk.

Since the car first hit the road in 2001 it"s been totally reliable, well, apart from a self inflicted drive shaft breakage, that is.

The creation of possibly the most famous Puma in the country, if not the world, generated interest in Tony, and what his company could do for Pumas in terms of performance, handling and styling.
He"s built up a reputation which continues to grow. Despite that Tony thinks that being in the north of England - Wakefield to be exact - puts him at a disadvantage when it comes to attracting customers.

So, how does Tony sum up his ever-growing business? "We"re a competent workshop which fits quality components," he replies. "We won"t sell you stuff that won"t work on your car, unless you insist - but I"ll always tell you if it works before you buy!"

For example, lots of customers say they want a chip, but it may not be the best option for improved performance. Tony says people are often better off with a performance manifold instead, which can release as much as 18 bhp - he"s got graphs to back up this claim. He describes this as old-skool technology that has been forgotten about, but he"s keen to resurrect it.

Over the years Pumaspeed has gained quite a reputation for putting Racing Puma engines where Ford never intended them to sit, such as in Kas and Fiestas, several of which have been featured in Fast Ford.

The cost for this type of conversion? Call it £3000 for getting a 160 bhp Racing Puma engine under a Fiesta bonnet. And Tony"s no slouch when it comes to transplanting a Zetec into an innocent Ka either.

Bodykits, wide-arch versions in particular, are also good sellers at Pumaspeed - how about £1000 for the Puma version, plus an extra £900 to fit, or maybe £425 for the F2 Racing Puma spoiler, and that"s painted and fitted.

Pumaspeed is not just about mental bodykits though, it is more than happy to carry out a routine full service for around £115, plus Vat.

Look out for a Milltek manifold and exhaust fitting guide for a MKVI Fiesta coming soon to a Fast Ford near you. Tony suspects that his Milltek system for the Fiesta ST150 is going to be a best seller - he"s getting some very positive feedback from his most recent sales.


Milltek already produces more unique parts for the Focus RS, such as a turbo downpipe de-cat system for those who have swapped to a GT28 turbo - that will set you back £185 and allows you to run up to 400 bhp.

The company also offers a wide range of performance and tuning parts for all types of Ford, and produces several of its own brands like Pumaspeed header tanks and stainless steel battery covers, while its rear discs conversion is finding its way into the back of many a fast Ford.
