The Mk4 generation of Focus ST EcoBoost is ripe for tuning straight out of the box. With a standard ST Mk4 running 99 RON fuel plus uprated intercooler and our Pumaspeed MaxD Stage 1R remap we have seen up to 370bhp and 550nm!
This is an incredible 80whp more than stock!!!

 So what have we done to achieve this 400+bhp?

Our own Focus ST Mk3 has undergone a full development schedule from a simple Stage 1 remap, with no bolt-ons, all the way to a best in class Stage 2R 400+ Plus conversion. To fully allow the car to breathe we have installed the following.

  • Milltek 200 Cell Sport Catalyst
  • Milltek Catback resonated (Quieter) Exhaust
  • Milltek GPF Resonated Delete Pipe
  • Airtec Intercooler
  • Airtec Full Boost Pipe Kit ( with stock electric DV )
  • Full MST Induction Kit and Crossover Pipe.
  • MaxDout Customised Stage 2R Calibration on the Stock Ford OE Turbo (not a Hybrid)

 It's taken a lot of testing on track and off track to achieve the reliabilty and to find the limits, and we've found the limit of torque. We know from first hand experience that the engine in the car can produce 645-650nm but this is way too strong for the conrods. So we will not allow any customer car torque numbers past 600nm. As you can see from the graph below you can see a perfect flat and torque capped 600nm.

Is it safe for my car?

There are very few remaps on the market today that have this sort or performance and also all the Ford OE built in safety features still included, this calibration has been written from the ground up with the usual development time and road testing done. To get it perfect with no throttle closure we have refined this to Version 37 which is an awful lot of dyno and road miles and many months worth of work. You will not be disapointed with its refinement and factory like smooth torque and power curve. Pumaspeed pride ourselves on offering not only fantastic performance, but also a great reliability record.

We are probably one of the only tuners to have had one of these new Focus ST motors apart, and at last Ford have learned some huge lessons from previous EcoBoost engines. Out are the weak and bendy conrods of old and out are the brittle and ringland prone pistons. At last ford have an engine we can punish hard!
 

ST Mk4 tunes available from MAXD:

Stage 1 - Up to 330bhp - 520nm with no or minimal hardware modifications, designed for 95 RON fuel, smooth progressive low boost factory-like calibration, a perfect addition giving extra drivability and economy.

Stage 1R - Up to 375bhp - 550nm with minimal hardware modifications such as intercooler and induction kit, designed for 99 RON fuel, more aggressive higher torque calibration, a perfect addition giving incredible gains in power, torque and economy.

Stage 2R  - Up to 410bhp - 600nm with minor bolt on hardware upgrades including intercooler, induction kit and turbo back exhaust. A very well mannered drive with a lovely hit of torque and a smooth progressive lift in power. Dwarfing the competition and giving you the full potential of the standard turbo when used with the full list of simple bolt on parts.

Stage 3R (COMING SOON) - Up to 440bhp - 600nm with the Pumaspeed X37 hybrid turbo and all available bolt on hardware. The most powerful hybrid turbo mapping available with total reliability day-to-day, and perfect low rev manners, with almost 50 turbos sold world wide, you are in great company with this setup. 

Valet Mode - Available on request to limit the vehicle to minimal performance, ideal if you're leaving your car in the care of somebody else. 

Immobiliser Mode - Available on request to completely kill the cars ability to start and run, perfect for if you're leaving your car for a long period of time.

Stock - MAXD have a database of stock original equipment files, these are available on request.
 

What do we do and how long does the ST Mk4 1R remap take?

Before we even touch your ECU, we do an initial visual vehicle health check to confirm there are no underlying issues which could be exacerbated by increasing your cars performance. We also plug in to your vehicles diagnostic port to perform a full health scan of the car to check for any stored error codes which you may not even know about!

The remapping process is relatively simple, we first connect your vehicle to our CTEK battery charger to ensure no voltage spikes or drops during the remapping process. Once hooked up to the charger, we plug into your vehicles OBD port and read the stock ECU data, we then update your specific ECU data with the new MAXD Stage 1R and import it back into your ECU via the OBD port again. 

Once the remapping process is complete we once again use the vehicles OBD port to reset any previously learned ECU values allowing your cars brain to make the most from the new calibration. This is then followed up with an in depth road datalogging session to confirm results and check for any minor running issues not picked up on the visual health check previously. 

All this is usually completed within the hour in house.

 

What's after the Stage 1R remap?

The new Ford Focus ST Mk4 2.3 EcoBoost has a few limiting factors that stop the car showing large amounts of power whilst being run on the dyno:
 

1. Clutch - The new redesigned 2.3 EcoBoost motor that powers the ST Mk4 is capable of producing immense levels of torque low down in the rev range, over 600nm in some cases! The stock clutch however really struggles if the torque is introduced too strongly, too quickly. We know from past experience that a simple stage 1R remap designed for a standard car should not require changing the clutch out, so we restrict this back to 550nm to remain inside the stock clutches operating window.  

2. Intercooler - The stock intercooler has a big job to do and is only just suitable for a 330bhp (500nm) Stage 1 map. We swap the intercooler out when installing the higher torque and higher powered Stage 1R map which develops up to 355bhp and as much as 550nm!

3. Turbocharger - The stock unmodified turbo unit fitted to the car will not flow anymore than 375bhp, even with with all the bolt-on parts such as downpipes, exhausts, air filter and cross-over pipework. Uprated hybrid turbo units are now available from Pumaspeed with a theoretical flow rate of over 410bhp with the correct bolt on parts and MAXD remap calibration.
